Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS)

HIMS, another primary focus of the practice, is an occupational substance abuse treatment program, that coordinates the identification, treatment and return to work process for aviators.    As a HIMS certified psychiatrist, I have evaluated hundreds of aviators and other members of the industry. These assessments are critical, as they pertain to preserving the integrity of the public airspace. Given the importance of air safety, conducting these assessments require a special skill set.

I have evaluated aviators referred by Aviation Medical Examiners (A.M.E.’s), counsel representing aviators, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration.  After completing my assessment and following recommendations, many of these aviators have gone on to receive medical certification.

Additionally, in the course of doing HIMS assessments, I have evaluated prospective aviators, many of them in high school or college, who are seeking medical certification, but have a prior or current psychiatric diagnosis, often depression, anxiety, and/or Attention-Deficit Disorder.  In these cases, a comprehensive assessment and meticulous review of pertinent records are required.  Not only have I conducted many of these complex assessments, but in doing so, I have worked closely with the prospective aviator’s psychologist and A.M.E.
